The tragic shooting that took place on Feb. 9 in front of the Urban League Village Apartments and the Northwest African American Museum has shattered our hearts.
Senseless acts of gun violence have continued to afflict our community. We express our sincere condolences to those impacted, especially to the family and friends of 23-year-old Anais Valencia, who tragically lost her life. We also lift up her friend who remains in critical condition.
The Urban League Village was developed in partnership with the community. Our collective mission was to create a cultural center for the Black community and provide affordable housing for people struggling to make ends meet. We are deeply committed to making sure the village is a safe and welcoming place for residents and their guests, Northwest African American Museum employees and patrons, and the whole community who enjoy the grounds.
The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle is working with Coast Property Management, which manages the Urban League Village, to ensure they are serving the needs of residents and commercial tenants by providing grief counseling and increasing onsite security. Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of residents and the community.
The Urban League works every day to empower African Americans and others who have been marginalized, so they can thrive by securing educational and economic opportunities. We remain dedicated to this work and the necessary safe environment in which it takes place.
